We have found that the greatest barriers to being a good leader are internal. Sometimes people have ideas about what the role requires that get them into real trouble. You won’t go wrong, though, if you can put the following practices into play.

·        A leader must always keep an eye on “the aura.” It is too tempting, when we assume a position even slightly elevated above our fellows, to believe that we deserve it. This is never true. When your colleagues see you as endowed with special powers and abilities, enjoy their regard, but don’t be fooled into imagining that you are fundamentally better than they. 

·        A leader must actively, diligently, energetically seek out opinions that are different from her own. Don’t be subject to the “CEO effect”! Put your back into finding out what people really think, and consider all alternatives before promoting your own views. 

·        A leader must connect with his followers. It is when people feel emotionally connected to you, and you to them, that you all can move forward together to achieve your common goals. This doesn’t mean getting sloppy or too personal, but it does mean maintaining genuine interest in and compassion for everyone in your organization – even the people you don’t like. 

·        A leader must study themself. Many of us, in our western culture with its focus on achievement, are moving too fast and hard to stop to think much about ourselves. Yet it is our own hangups, internal roadblocks, and emotional quirks that will trip us up as leaders, unless we pay attention.

Thanks to all the Veterans who served.  I was proud to serve from Nov. of 1965 until May of 1979 in the United States Navy.

There is a big Veteran’s Function at the Orange County Fair Grounds on Saturday, November 11, 2017 beginning at 10 AM.  Parking is free.  Please brings friends, family, and grandchildren.

566.34 Maximum Annuity Benefits

566.341 Eighty Percent Limitation

The basic annuity of a retiring employee may not exceed 80 percent of
high-3 average salary except when an annuity in excess of 80 percent results
from crediting unused sick leave. (See 562.4.) If an annuity computed under
the general formula exceeds 80 percent, it is reduced to an amount equal to
80 percent of the high-3 average salary. The reduction is made prior to
applying any reductions or increases.

566.342 Excess Service

If employees have service in excess of the years and months required to
provide the 80 percent maximum (usually 41 years and 11 months),
retirement deductions withheld after they have completed the service
requirements may be:

a. Credited to their voluntary contribution accounts if their regular
deduction obligations have been satisfied. (If employees owe a deposit
or redeposit, the money is first applied to that, and any balance is
credited as voluntary contributions.)

b. Refunded to employees if they elect the refund before their annuity is
granted and if no deposit or redeposit is due.

c. Paid in a lump sum to eligible survivors if the employee dies

Whereas, a majority of APWU retirees department members paid full dues for decades; arguably far longer than a majority of current active dues-paying APWU members, and

Whereas, as the mothers and fathers of the APWU; retired members are a storehouse of knowledge, battle-tested experience, and wisdom to be utilized as a valuable APWU asset, and

Whereas retirees regularly assist locals and participate in APWU functions such as state and national elections and campaigns such as Staples, and

Whereas, retirees are MEMBERS – please refer to Article 3 Section 4 (e) All retirees who desire to become members of the APWU Retirees Department shall pay Thirty-Six Dollars ($36.00) per year per capita tax to the National Union.  Article 3 is membership.

Resolved all retiree in attendance at the APWU National Convention will be allowed voice and vote on all retiree related issues, and therefore be it further

Resolved, to amend the APWU Constitution & By-Laws; Article 6. “Representation”; Adding a New Section 6 (Change present Section 6 to Section 7) to read: “Wherever in Article 6, Sections 1 through 5. References to; ‘National Convention; Local, State, regional affiliates, or organizations voting strength/representation’ such provisions will apply to chartered APWU State and Local Retiree Chapters.

Resolved the new section would read:

SEC 6. Retiree delegates will be seated with a voice and a vote pursuant to the formula in Article 6, section one.

2018 we will be in Pittsburgh for the National Convention.  When the issue of voice and vote comes up I sincerely hope all of the delegates review the member’s bills of rights.  Especially note items 3,  Every member has the right to freedom of speech and the right to be heard and item ,  Every member has the right to participate in the activities of this Union.
